  A payment processor is a 3rd party company that your shopping cart communicates with and hands off the transaction details for on line settlement with the banking sysem (typically Visa & Mastercard). The charges are processed either through their Internet merchant account or your Internet Merchant Account depending on the service plan you have selected and the products being offered by the particular company.
