Definition of Common Hosting Terms: Web Hosting Canada:
The word web describes the Internet which is the interlinked
network of web pages. Hosting is the act of serving up the
pages from a particular web site. A company that
specializes in this industry is a hoster of web sites.
Canada is located in North America directly north of the
United States of America. So when we take this all together the term
" web hosting Canada" refers to companies serving web pages to the
internet that are Canadian or are aimed towards the Canadian
hosting market.
Canadian Web Hosting: See definition for web hosting
Canada. It is essentially the same concept.
Domain Name Registration: Domain Names are the easy
to remember names that are used by the web. This is in contrast to
the idea of using ip addresses. Domain names are mapped to the
responding web servers by DNS (Domain Name Service) servers that
have authority for a particular Domain. Chinookwebs.com or chinook-computers.com
are examples of a domain name. Domains can end with different
extensions than .com, some common examples are .ca, .net, .org,
.biz, .info etc. In order to get a domain name one must complete a
domain name registration process, usually with a domain
registrar.
Domain Registrar: A company (usually) that accepts
applications from the public for Domain name registration. The
Registrar will confirm availability of the domain name on behalf
of the applicant and then input the appropriate information into the
DNS system. Domain names are rented to the applicant in 1 year time
periods.
Database Web Hosting: This refers to the ability to serve
up pages that include content that comes (derived) from databases.
Usually pages that have this feature are referred to as dynamic
pages, meaning that the content may change depending on the
circumstances of the page being viewed. This may include user
choices or other variables. A database is defined as a
collection of data arranged for ease and speed of search and
retrieval.
SQL Hosting: This is similar to database web hosting but
refers specifically to the programming language being used to
manipulate the database. SQL stands for Structured Query
Language. Common usage of SQL hosting would refer to the use of
Microsoft's™ SQL Server program, or MySql.
Web Design: The look and feel of information presented on
a web page. Web Designers use various tools to manipulate the html (hypertext
markup language) present on a page in order to enhance
the appearance. A web designer is typically an artisan that will
perform web design for a web site.
ASP: In the hosting world this can refer to two different
things. Firstly Active Server Pages, which is a
scripting language that will generate html code, most commonly used
on dynamic sites because of the built-in support for databases
and variables. The second definition refers to Application
Service Provider, which is a company that hosts
complete applications for clients for example Exchange Server would
be an application.
ASP.Net: This is the next generation of Active server
pages built around the Microsoft .Net framework. Some of its
features are security , ease of use, flexibility and compatibility
with compiled programming languages such as C#.
Windows Hosting: Refers to web servers using Microsoft
Windows Server Software as the operating system (OS). Versions
included Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows
2003.
Ecommerce Hosting: Web Serving focused on ecommerce.
Usually requires specific technical differences to the server
to accommodate special features such as shopping carts etc. Some
common things include security certificates (SSL - Secure
Sockets Layer). ASP or ASP.Net support and database
support. All this is then usually tied into a payment gateway so
that the shopper can pay for purchases using a credit card.
Ecommerce Web Design: Creating web pages that will assist
in the selling of products. Most often includes a shopping cart and
means of settling the transaction via payment processing.
Email Hosting: Providing email addresses based on a
domain name without hosting a web site.

single client.
