What is an IDE Channel?

In the picture to the right, we are showing a typical motherboard arrangement for the IDE Channels. Most motherboards will have some indication of which socket is primary printed on the motherboard itself.
Here is a very simplified diagram of how data might flow in a pc system, and why we consider the Primary IDE and Secondary IDE connectors as channels.
In this picture we are clarifying again the idea of IDE Channels and also identifying the 40pin ribbon cable that is used to connect the hard drives and other devices to the Primary IDE interface.
